With a pair of
coaching changes in the offing and potentially more on the way, the league
office decided against extending an invite to the Rams coaching staff for the
Jan. 26 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala.
Although the Rams
finished with the second-worst record in the NFL at 3-13, it apparently wasn’t
enough to garner an invite to Mobile for an up close look at some of the
nation’s top seniors in preparation for the 2008 NFL Draft.
According to Senior
Bowl officials, the coaching staffs for the game are not chosen based solely on
which teams have the worst record. That choice is completely at the discretion
of the league office.
Despite interest
from the Rams coaching staff in working the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala
in two weeks, the league office decided to pass on the St.
Louis staff because of the coaching changes that have
already been made and more that could be coming.
In this case, the
league opted for San Francisco and
Oakland, two staffs that also have
some unrest.
Last week, Rams
coach Scott Linehan expressed his interest in coaching one of the teams, but
said nothing was certain.
“It certainly
interests me,” Linehan said. “We are in that position for obvious reasons. There
are a lot of factors that factor into that as well. It doesn’t necessarily
always go to the person with the records we have compared to other teams. They
wait about a week once the regular season is over to
decide.”
But just because
they won’t be coaching doesn’t mean the Rams won’t be in
Mobile full force. The Senior Bowl is often regarded as a
glorified job fair and it’s entirely possible the Rams will be making some of
the coaching changes while in
Alabama.
